Question and Answers

Q:

Why doe my gas oven igniter work but the gas takes a long time before it comes on?

A:

Even though the igniter is glowing, it is likely that this is the failed component. The gas valve will not open until the resistance of the glowing igniter falls to a point where enough current will pass through the safety gas valve in order for it to open. A technician will normally measure the amp draw through the wire between the igniter and the safety gas valve to verify this type of igniter problem. I do not recommend that you take this type of reading yourself. If you want to fix this problem yourself, you can take a chance on replacing the igniter. Based on your symptoms, this will likely fix the oven. The risk is small that this problem is caused by any other failure.

The part number for the igniter is 5303131300. You can order it from the Sears PartsDirect website.

Q:

Kenmore Range model 790-77471792: the oven door latch is in a locked position!

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The model number you submitted does not appear to be a valid model. I will assume the model is 790.77471790

In order to possibly get the door locking mechanism to operate and reach the unlocked position will require pushing and holding the oven door light switch/plunger inwards at all times and then program and start a self cleaning cycle. After 30 seconds of starting the clean cycle, press the Clear/OFF pad and wait to see if the door lock mechanism moves to the unlocked position. Once it reaches the unlocked position you can release the oven door light switch and then shut the door. You oven should operate once the door lock mechanism reaches the unlocked position.

If the door lock does not move to the unlocked position then I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your range. An open chassis ground prevents self diagnostic check of the locking mechanism at power start up, and will not allow the user to program functions other than setting the time of day and timer.

You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
