Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore Elite electric oven Model # 790-41013801

A:

That failure could be caused by a control board problem. It could also be caused by a failed bake element, a bad oven temperature sensor probe or a wiring failure in that circuit. Check to see if the broiler works. If the broiler works, I recommend that you shut off the house circuit breakers for the range and check the bake element. If you see no visible problems with the bake element, then you can check the resistance of that component using a volt/ohm meter. It should measure between 10 and 40 ohms. If the element is bad, then it will need to be replaced.

If that bake element is okay, then you could have a problem with the electronic oven control board or with the wiring in that circuit. You can re-install the bake element and access the electronic oven control board in the console. Pull the range out of the cabinet to access screws on each side of the console (with the house circuit breakers for the range still shut off). Remove those screws and then you should be able to fold the control panel out to access the back of the electronic oven control board. You can check the wiring. The wiring diagram for the oven circuit is shown in the image below. If that wiring is okay, then you can check the resistance through the bake element circuit using that wiring diagram as a guide. You should measure the same resistance through that circuit that you measured through the element itself. If the resistance is the same, then the wiring in that bake element circuit is okay. In that situation, you will probably need to replace that electronic oven control board.

If the broil element does not heat in the first test described above, then you could have a tripped thermal circuit breaker (see the L2 OUT circuit in the wiring diagram below). You can try to reset that thermal circuit breaker by shutting off the house circuit breakers for the range and pulling it out of the cabinet. Remove the outer back panel on the range. You should see that thermal circuit breaker mounted to the outside back panel of the oven cavity. It should have a small red button on it. Press that button to reset that thermal circuit breaker. Reassemble the range and see if the oven elements will heat.

These initial troubleshooting tips may help you diagnose and repair that oven heating failure on your own. If you need parts, you can order them from this page: Kenmore Elite Range Model 790.41013801 Parts . Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breakers for the range before accessing and replacing internal components.

Q:

How much does the UIB for a 790 elite range cost? I bought this range 4 years ago and have other troubles with it such as the oven going out after self cleaning

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The failure is more likely the electronic oven control than the control panel/touch panel. The electronic oven control is part #316577016 at the cost of $151.46. I strongly suggest having a service technician to properly diagnose and repair your range. If you install the oven control and it continues to go blank, the oven control cannot be returned. Any electrical part installed cannot be returned and this is why I suggest having a technician diagnose which component is faulty.

If you get decide to call a service technician to diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services.
