Question and Answers

Q:

Why does the tray under my Kenmore Elite refrigerator fill with water every 8-10 hours?

A:

It sounds like the tray that you are describing is the drain tray for the automatic defrost system in this refrigerator. The refrigerator will stop every 8 to 10 hours and go into a defrost cycle. A heater element below the evaporator in the freezer will energize to melt frost build-up on the fins of this evaporator. The condensate will drip into a pan under the evaporator. This condensate water is then directed into the drain pan underneath the refrigerator through a drain tube. This condensate water is evaporated off using the heat from the condenser and the air circulation of the condenser fan. It normally disappears before the next defrost cycle.

If this is what you are seeing, it is normal for this type of refrigerator. If the unit is cooling properly, you should have no problems or failures in the refrigerator.

If you have a different problem than what is described above, resubmit your question with additional details.

Q:

The tray under my fridge fills up and overflows every 8-10 hours. It is a Kenmore elite. What now??

A:

If the tray is overflowing it is probably because either the refrigerator or freezer door gasket is not sealing properly.

Use the dollar bill test to determine where the gasket or gaskets are leaking.

Take a dollar bill and open the refrigerator door. Place the dollar bill so the door gasket will close on it. Close the refrigerator door and pull the dollar bill out. You should feel a slight resistance in removing the dollar bill. Move over the width of the dollar bill and repeat this process. Do this all the way around both refrigerator and freezer doors and mark any places where there is no resistance.

Clean the surface of the gaskets and the front of the cabinet with a clean cloth and hand dishwashing detergent and dry. Try the dollar bill in the areas of no resistance again. If there is still no resistance the door gasket needs to be replaced.

Q:

I have a Kenmore Elite 70 pint dehumidifier model 251.90701 and the temperature is always 77 - 80, yet the ambient air is not that hot? What's right?

A:

That ambient temperature reading on the dehumidifier is measured by a sensor inside the dehumidifier. That temperature sensor may not be accurate. You did not indicate the actual ambient temperature that you are measuring at the dehumidifier. If the temperature is only off by a few degrees, this could be normal. If the temperature is off by 10 degrees or more, then you may want to have the dehumidifier checked by a technician if it is under warranty. Call 1-800-4MY-HOME (1-800-469-4663) regarding warranty service.
