I know that it can be very inconvenient for you not to have your trash compactor working properly.  While you are waiting for an expert to respond, I have added a helpful link that may provide information to assist you with your question.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

It's not the start switch causing the unit to quit running when released. Below is a description of what must take place in order for the motor to continue to run once start is released. I also added three images below with the theory of operation.

After the start switch is released and the ram moves down about one inch, the top limit/directional switch changes position (the movement of the ram causes this action) and maintains a circuit to the run windings of the motor. The other internal switch of the top limit/directional switch positions itself to complete a circuit to the CCW start windings (ram up direction). This condition is necessary when the ram stalls, it will change the direction of the ram.

I suspect it may have a faulty top limit switch or possibly a faulty motor centrifugal switch on the motor. The top limit switch is located under the top of the compactor in front of the ram behind the control panel area.

The top limit switch operation can be tested with an Ohm meter.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link:Sears Home Services.
