Question and Answers

Why won't our dishwasher drain after a complete wash cycle?

Here are some tips that may help you resolve this drain issue in your dishwasher:

  • Check for excessive suds in the dishwasher that would prevent it from draining properly. If the dishwasher drains properly after the suds dissipate, then you will need to adjust the amount of dishwasher detergent and rinse aid that you are using. Follow the guidelines in your owner's manual regarding the amount of detergent that you should use based on your water hardness.
  • If you have an air gap on the drain system of the dishwasher, check to see if it is clogged.
  • Check the drain hose for clogs or restrictions. A build-up of grease in the part of the hose just in front of the connection to the drain or garbage disposal under your sink could prevent the dishwasher from draining properly.
  • Press the Cancel/Drain and see if the drain pump runs. If not, you could have a wiring failure or a failed drain pump. I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair this type of failure.
  • If the drain pump runs but the dishwasher does not pump the water, then you could have a clog in the sump area. You can shut off the breaker to disconnect electrical power and use the procedure in the image below to access and check the sump area for a clog or restriction in the sump area.
These tips may help you resolve your drain problem in the dishwasher. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details.
