Q:

The adapter vent tube #318317100, for built in electric oven #79040522(640 or 400):

A:

That part is shown in the image below. It fits over the exit vent for the oven cavity. It will slightly reduce the flow of air and smoke out of the oven during the bake mode, broil mode or self clean cycle. If that part has fallen out of the oven, then you may be able to insert a new one yourself. I don't have specific information on how to replace that component. You may be able to push it into place from inside the oven cavity. If not, then you would need to shut off the house circuit breakers for the oven to completely disconnect electrical power and pull the oven out of the cabinet. You would then need to disassemble the top of the oven to access that vent tube and the top of the oven cavity. I don't recommend that you attempt that type of repair yourself. Here is a link for the Sears Service website: Sears Home Services .

You should be able to run the self clean cycle with that component missing. I recommend that you clean out any excessive spills before running that self clean cycle. You may notice more smoke coming out of the oven during that self clean cycle. You will need to adequately ventilate your home and protect your pets and birds during that cycle. I do not know of any danger that would be caused by operating the oven normally without that vent adapter in place. I do recommend that you replace it (or have a service technician replace it) as soon as possible. If you can wait until you replace that component before running the self clean cycle, that would be better.

I hope that this information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know.

Q:

Should we leave our refrigerator on or off when gone for 6 months.

A:

I recommend removing power or unplug the refrigerator when you are gone for the 6 months. I would continue to leave the doors open for ventilation.

Stuffing the refrigerator with newspaper basically would displace volume and so that it may not have to run as often and will absorb odors. The door seals will not dry out just because it's not running.

I would not recommend leaving newspaper in for 6 months with the refrigerator running. The newspaper could become humid or wet and cause an odor themselves.
