Q:

Porter Cable model 637 EHD tiger saw type 2 #181985 sparked and died after cutting a nail. What broke?

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry that you reciprocating saw has stopped running.

It could be a number of things, so lets start with the easy things first.

Check the power cord to make sure it is not cut or broken.

If the spark came from the inside then first remove each of the brush caps on the side of the motor and look inside and examine the brushes and the holders.

If they check ok then it could be the switch that is bad and you will have to split the case in order to check the switch contacts.

If this unit is under warranty I would suggest that you take it to the local service repair.

If it is not under warranty I would suggest that you split the case by removing the two handle half’s and this will get you to the switch and the area of the brushes and rotor.

I have included a part breakdown below.

I hope this will help.

Thank you for using Manage My Life.
