Question and Answers

Q:

Three Kenmore dishwashers with the same problem (In our apt complex): bottom impeller does not spin; water does not reach top rack.

A:

I must assume the wash pump motor is running. If this assumption is correct then the most likely failure is the lack of hot water. There must be enough water lying in the bottom of the tub in order for the wash pump to build up enough pressure to cause the pop up spray tower to extend and to cause the spray arm to rotate. When there is enough water being pumped through the spray arm the water pressure will cause the spray arm to rotate just like a lawn sprinkler spray arm rotates when the water faucet is turned on.

Try this: Open the door after it has filled and then manually add about a quart more of water and then shut the door and start it. If the spray arm begins to spray water with more force and pressure then I recommend having the hot water supply checked. If the water supply is okay then the dishwasher will likely need to have a new water inlet valve installed.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Q:

What part do I need to replace if my dishwasher is leaking from the heating element?

A:

It is likely that you will need to replace the heater element (part number 154247601) and two heater nuts (part number 154106202). In some instances, one of the element nuts below the tub is cracked and could cause the leak. If you shut off the breaker for the dishwasher and check this issue, you may be able to avoid replacing the heater element. Remove the bottom front kick panel to access this area. If you find a heater nut cracked, remove and replace both heater nuts and see if this fixes the problem. If not, then you will also need to replace the heating element.
