Question and Answers

Q:

I have a Craftsman 120-240 volt 8000 watt generator model 580328391. It is only putting out 4.6 volts at the 120 volt outlet and 8.8 in the 220 volt outlet.

A:

The power module sends the dc voltage to the brushes to cause the alternator to generate the proper voltage. The residual magnetism in the rotor causes the alternator to put out the 4.6-8.8 volts. The power module converts the ac voltage to dc and sends it to the brushes, causing the alternator to put out 120-240 volts.

The power module is most likely the problem. The system control board (located in the control panel) could also cause this problem. It is unusual for the system control board to fail in this way.

I would replace the power module. I think that will solve the problem.
