Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore Series 80

A:

If you spin the input shaft in the correct direction it should cause the agitate shaft to move. If it does not move it very well could indicate a gear case failure. NOTE: Be sure the motor coupler was not broken that links the motor to the gear case. If the motor coupler is broken it will not agitate or spin.

Q:

Series 80 does not agitate or spin

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry but we have sold the 80 series for many years and not all have the same wiring. I will give you information based on one of our newer 80 series washers. By what you have stated, it sounds like a lid switch failure. The lid has to be closed for the motor to run on your washer. If the lid switch is faulty, it will act as if the lid is not closed. On some models, make sure the lid hinge screws are tight. If the screws are loose, the hinge might not activate the lid switch. A quick check you can do is to run a cycle with the lid switch jumped. If the washer operates, the lid switch need to be replaced.

To jump the lid switch you need to unplug the washer and open the console. I have provided you with the instructions for opening the console below. Once you have the console open, locate the connector for the lid switch. Place an insulated jumper between the colored wires. Not the green it is a ground and will cause a short. After inserting the jumper make sure it will not touch anything metal, plug the washer in. start the washer in a cycle, and let it go. If the washer completes the cycle, you need to replace the lid switch. Do not leave the jumper in while you are waiting for the part. The jumper is only of the test.

To you replace the lid switch you have to remove the cabinet of the washer. The instructions for that are also in the image below. Once the cabinet is removed you can take the screws out securing the lid switch and remove the harness from the clips along the underside of the cabinet. Then reinstall the lid switch in the reverse order. Before you reassemble the cabinet, please read the instructions for installing the cabinet provided in the image.

If the motor is running but the washer will not agitate or spin, I would suspect the motor coupler. The third image shows how to replace the motor coupler.

I hope this is helpful. Please reply below with a model number and more details. Here is a link to order any parts you need. Sears Parts Direct .

Q:

How to replace bearing #80?

A:

Thank you for your question. I have checked the model number you have submitted. The bearing is tight fit in the block of the compressor, this prevents oil leaks. You should be able to replace the bearing by carefully tapping the old one out with a hammer and a drift punch. Make sure you do not gouge the block when removing the old bearing or it might leak. Then to install the new bearing, place the old bearing against it and tap on the old bearing with the hammer.

I hope this is helpful.
