Question and Answers

Q:

My mower starts (every time) but only run for a few seconds and dies. Carburetor problem?

A:

These symptoms do point to a carburetor that is stopped up and not drawing fuel. If the mower is no longer under warranty, you will likely need to overhaul the carburetor. The carburetor kit part number is 792383. You can order this kit from the Sears PartsDirect website.

Q:

Adjusting valves

A:

Thank you for your question on the adjusting of the valves on the engine.

The .003 to .005 is a little tight but since you changed the cam shaft and timed it correctly that would have also replaced the compression release.

I think I would only lower the piston past top dead center a 1/4 inch in the cylinder not a 1/4 turn before setting the valves at .004 and .006. I understand that this may be splitting hairs but try it to see if it will help.

If you have had this problem for a while the starter windings may be damaged from trying to turn over the engine against the compression.

Please let me know what you find out with the new settings.

Sam A.
