Q:

What would cause my GE gas oven to take 35-45 minutes to preheat when it used to preheat in 15-20 minutes?

A:

The model number submitted is an incomplete model number. Without knowing the complete model number I will only be able to provide general information. Based on your symptom the oven glow bar igniter is likely weak causing the gas valve to take a long time to open. I added an image below with the theory of burner operation. Generally speaking the floor of the oven is likely removable in order to access the bake burner and igniter.

The bake igniter will likely need to be replaced. Resubmit your question with the complete model number if needed for model specific instructions.

Q:

What causes my Kenmore gas range (model 73281) to take a long time to preheat?I have a gas range (Kenmore Model # 73281) and preheating takes a very long time! What could cause?

A:

The owner's manual for your range does give some instructions on checking and adjusting the bake (and broil) burner element flames. This may help resolve your preheating problem. The images below are excerpts from your owner's manual. Follow the steps in these images to check the bake element to see if it is burning properly. Adjust it if necessary to achieve the proper flame.

If you are not able to adjust the flame to burn properly, then I recommend calling a service technician to repair the oven. You may have a component failure or other problem that is preventing the oven from preheating properly.

If you want to attempt more advanced diagnosis and repair yourself, resubmit your question with additional details based on your attempts to adjust the flame as described above.

You can find the owner's manual online at our Manage My Home website. On the home page, hold your mouse over the square labeled "HOME" in the upper left of the page and choose the option "Products and manuals" from the drop-down menu that appears.

Then enter the following information in the search fields:

  • Type of Product: Range
  • Brand: KENMORE
  • Model no.: 36273281 NOTE: Use this full model number to access your manual.

If you have any trouble accessing the manual, please call the Manage My Home Member Services Team at 1-800-803-6775, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Central Time. They will be more than happy to help you track down the manual.

I also included a link below for the owner's manual for your range. You may be able to open this link.
