Question and Answers

Q:

My direct vent water heater (new) won't start. I get an error indicating a problem with the Fuel Valve Sensor.

A:

The Owner's manual has some troubleshooting guide lines. If you do not have the Owner's manual you can view and download it from Manage My Life . Yes, the two Red wires should attach to the "FV" sensor. The "FV" sensor is key #23 in the parts diagram inside the Owner's manual.

The new FVIR models use a standard thermocouple to monitor pilot flame operation and have a “thermal switch/FV sensor mounted in the combustion chamber access door. The manual-reset, thermal switch reacts to elevated combustion chamber temperatures due to prolonged irregular flame characteristics caused by an insufficient supply of combustion air, improper vent operation or a flammable vapor ignition incident. It shuts off the gas supply to the burner assembly before it starts producing excessive (400 PPM) Carbon Monoxide (CO).

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
