Question and Answers

Q:

Error CI

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The "CI" indicates an Instantaneous Current limit. This means the motor is pulling a spike of 26 amps or more at the motor. This could be caused by a faulty motor, friction issue or a faulty motor control board. I strongly suggest calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your washer. I added an image below with some technical information if you feel confident in measuring the motor windings with an Ohm meter. Measuring the motor winding can be performed at the motor control board after disconnecting the P6 harness connector. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before placing the control panel in the service position.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Q:

How can I fix the CI and CA error codes on my washer?

A:

If a status signal comes back from the motor controller that a current limit has been breached, the unit will return to standby mode and display either “CA for average current limit trip, or “CI for instantaneous current limit trip.

Average current trip occurs if there is a 2-second average of current draw greater than 5.55 Amps at the motor windings.

Instantaneous current trip occurs if there is a spike of 26 Amps instantly at the motor windings.

  • This may signify problems with the drive motor, thermal protector, or motor controller.
  • Overloading the unit may cause this problem. _ Press STOP/CANCEL to clear the display.

First, you will need to check for any resistance or binding of the empty spin basket when rotating it by hand. If the basket spins easily and smoothly without any noises most likely the cause of the CI and CA error codes is either the drive motor or motor control board.

A technician would first ohm the motor windings and compares his readings to the Drive Motor winding resistance chart. I added the chart in the image below.

If the motor checks out OK, the technician would replace the motor control board and then test operation.

I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your washer.

Q:

i have a kenmore side by side refrigerator and the front panel is blinking "CI". We have checked the icemaker several times. How do I stop it from blinking

A:

Without a full model number for your Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator, it is difficult to provide specific troubleshooting for this error code. According to your symptoms, it sounds like you have an older Kenmore refrigerator model that begins with model number 363. . . These are one of the few types of Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators that display this type of error code. If the ice maker has been replaced on this type of refrigerator, you will normally need to unplug the refrigerator and then cut and tape off the brown and white current sensor wires from the ice maker. Before recommending that you try this fix, I would need the full model number of your refrigerator to verify the technical information on your model. I recommend that you submit the model number of your refrigerator and any other details pertinent to this failure (whether the ice maker is working). We will assist you further once we receive additional information.
