Question and Answers

Q:

What is the manufacturing date of my Kenmore dishwasher model 665 that has a serial number beginning with FJ?

A:

The FJ does indicate that this unit was manufactured in 1999. Most Kenmore dishwashers beginning with model number 665 will last about 15 years. Since the unit is older than 1/2 of the average useful life, it is not normally recommended to spend more than 1/2 of the price of a replacement model on a repair. If you have a service technician repair the dispenser, it will likely cost between $150 and $250 to fix this problem depending on the exact cause.

This failure is fairly minor. Most of the time it is caused by a failed dispenser assembly in most Kenmore dishwashers beginning with model number 665. On some models, you may be able to replace the dispenser assembly yourself. I provided a procedure for replacing the dispenser assembly on a common 665 Kenmore dishwasher in the image below. If your dispenser looks like this one, then you may be able to fix your problem by ordering a new dispenser assembly from the Sears PartsDirect website. Use your full model number to access the parts list diagram for your particular dishwasher. Shut off the breaker for the dishwasher and replace the dispenser using the procedure shown below. NOTE: Before ordering the part, shut off the breaker for the dishwasher and check the wire harness connections. If replacing the dispenser does not fix the problem, you could have a wiring failure or a failed control board (or timer) on the dishwasher.

If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your Kenmore dishwasher.

Q:

Kenmore Elite HE3 electric dryer won't heat

A:

Your measurements indicate that the heating circuit is probably okay.

A voltage supply problem could prevent the dryer from heating if that relay on the control board is working. The dryer will run if only the L1 leg of 120 volt power is supplied to the dryer. If the second leg of 120 volt power (L2) is missing, then the element will not heat. I recommend that you check the house circuit breakers or house fuses for the dryer outlet. If the breakers are okay, then you can carefully check the outlet for proper voltage using a volt/ohm meter as shown in this video:

If the outlet is okay, then you can check the wiring on the terminal block. If that wiring is okay, then you could try one more brief test to determine whether the heater relay is bad on that control board. Unplug the dryer and access that control board.  Connect the wires going to and from the heater relay together and tape them with electrical tape. This will essentially bypass the heater relay for a brief test. The image below shows a wiring diagram of your dryer with that heater circuit traced in red. If you bypass that relay and the dryer heats, then you have verified that all of the other components are okay and that the control board will need to be replaced. Note: Unplug the dryer and restore the original wiring configuration to that heater relay as soon as this brief test is completed.

I hope that this additional information helps. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details including the full model number of your HE3 dryer.
