Question and Answers

Q:

Oil Leak CV 16

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I will be happy to assist you with the repair. I recommend checking the smell and the level of the oil. If the engine is over filled and smells like gas the problem is in the carburetor. If the oil smells, fine but over filled just drain some out. Once you have the oil level adjust, check the air filter. If it is oil soaked, replace the filter, and check the operation. The engine will likely, smoke for about five minutes. If it still leaks, the problem could be a failed breather or worn engine. You will need to do some further checks to diagnose this problem.

I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to reply below if you need any further assistance.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Q:

On a Kohlor CV 460S can a worn slot in my flywheel be shearing keys. I have gone thru 4 keys now.

A:

If the slot on the flywheel is worn enough to let the key move, it can cause it to shear. You can replace the flywheel without replacing anything else.

The most common cause for flywheel keys to start shearing after 1 has been replaced is the torque of the nut that holds the flywheel on.

The flywheel nut needs to be torqued to 300 inch lbs. This equals to 25 ft. lbs.

In order to get the nut that tight, someone has to hold the flywheel with a screwdriver jammed in the ring gear on the flywheel.

Q:

Craftsman riding lawn mower model 917.271011 w/ kohler engine model CV 15S 15.5 hp starting problems.

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor engine. If you have fresh fuel in the float bowl and the engine will not start, I suspect the fuel solenoid also. To check the solenoid you will need to first verify you have 12 volts DC to the solenoid when the key is turned on. If you do have this voltage, I recommend removing the solenoid and checking its operation. I found a video that shows how to check the solenoid. Click here to watch the video. Be sure you are working in a well-ventilated area and there are no open flames.

If the solenoid is defective, you can order the replacement from the following link. Replacement parts for a Kohler engine model CV15S-41567
