A:

Thank you for your question on the scroll saw blades breaking.

This is a fact of life with a scroll saw. If you have not used a scroll saw very much you will experience a learning curve for awhile until you learn the feel of the material going through the blade and even then you will break blades as they heat up from friction and get dull.

Use good quality blades that are ground and not stamped for the teeth. These are sharper and have a more defined kerf and will last longer.

I believe they are correct in that the tool checks to be okay.

But there are some things you can do as well as going through the learning curve for using a scroll saw.

1. Make sure you have the correct blade for what you are cutting.

2. That the material is not two thick.

3. Make sure the blade is tight but not too tight.

4. Soft wood vs hard wood will require that you slow the speed of the saw and slow down the feed rate.

5. Make sure you have the hold down on the material with enough force that the work will not chatter up and down.

6. Control your side movement to minimize the blade flexing.

7. Do not use spiral blades if you can help it. They are too brittle and will break easily.

I have given you a link to some scroll saw user tips below.

I am sorry I did not know that you were not cutting any wood. Seeing that is has been sitting up for a long time I would look and the drive system for the arms because if it is snapping the blades without even cutting wood it sounds the tension is either way to tight or the arm are not pivoting freely and moving together and causing the blades to flex and break. The two arms are not moving together and bowing the blades. Pop the side caps off the pivot bearings on the arms and lightly lube them to make sure they are moving freely. Also lube the links on the counter balance connecting links down by the motor. Please let me know what you have discovered. Sam A.
