Question and Answers

Why does my Magic Chef gas oven model #31213XAA not heat?

Even though it is glowing, the glow bar igniter (part number 12400035) is probably the failed component in this situation. The theory of operation for that type of ignition system is shown in the image below. If you have a clamp-on ammeter, you can check the amp draw through that circuit. Use extreme caution when making this type of check. The range will need to be plugged in with internal components exposed to conduct this test. If you are not completely confident that you can safely check that amp draw, I recommend that you have a service technician check it. Here is a link for the Sears Service website: Sears Home Services . If you conduct that test on your own, be sure that you unplug the range immediately following that test.

If you want to skip the amp draw test, you can likely fix this problem by replacing that igniter. According to your description, the thermostat is okay and the gas valve is probably working properly.

Be sure that you unplug the range before accessing internal components.
