Q:

How do I replace the cutter blade on my Craftsman chipper shredder? Are the retaining bolt threads left hand or right hand?

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the chipper. To remove the blade bolt you have to hold the impeller with one hand. Then turn the bolt counter clockwise with a wrench. Before installing the new blade inspect the impeller for bent parts and clean up any debris. If it is ok just install the blade in the reverse order.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

The engine shaft is tapered (no puller available for this) you have to break the impeller loose from the shaft. Remove the bolt and washer holding the impeller on the motor shaft. Start the bolt back in the hole. Run it in until the head is only 1/8 inch away from the impeller. Place a large screw driver or pry bar between the impeller and the rear of the chipper, and pry hard on one side. Hit the head of the bolt firmly with a good sized hammer. The shock will break the impeller loose and it will come off. If the impeller does not loosen up with a couple of whacks with the hammer use a quality penetrating oil and allow it to sit for at least half an hour. If the impeller does not loosen after that, do not continue banging on it, you could damage the shaft or the engine. I highly recommend calling a service professional to diagnose and repair your chipper. I was unable to find an alternate source for parts that were any cheaper than what you have found. If you require further assistance please resubmit your question with more details. I will be looking forward to helping you again in the near future.

Q:

I am trying to get the auger pulley on my snow thrower off. It is a model 536.881500 22 inch. I have the manual.

A:

The instructions are correct. If you are having trouble unscrewing the pulley, spray the threads with WD40 or Liquid Wrench and use a strap wrench around the pulley. After the WD40 or Liquid Wrench has soaked 30-40 minutes tap the hub of the pulley with a hammer several times. The tapping helps the WD40 or Liquid Wrench penetrate the threads.

Q:

auger on snow blower will not turn, cutter blade is running.

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having problems with the snow blower. If the auger is not turning, I recommend checking the belt first. I have provided you with the instructions for checking the belt. If the belt seems to be fine start the engine and have, someone pull the auger lever while you watch the augers from a safe distance. If the impeller is spinning and the augers are not I recommend checking the shear bolts. The shear bolts are made to break if the auger comes into contact with something hard. If the shear bolts are ok, the problem would be a sheared gear in the front gear box. To replace this gear you have to completely disassemble the front of the snow blower. A service technician usually does this type of repair. I hope this is helpful.
