Q:

Which side of the dryer does the black wire go to?

A:

Given the details of your question, I assume that you are connecting a power cord to the terminal block of a dryer. I provided the instructions for installing a power cord for a common Kenmore electric dryer in the image below. This should help you properly wire the outlet cord on your dryer. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your dryer.

Q:

Why is the dryer turning my clothes black?

A:

You did not mention whether the gas source for the dryer is propane or natural gas. If the source is propane, you could have a soot problem due to an exhaust air flow problem or a problem with the burner. Check the venting and the lint screen. If you use dryer softener sheets, I recommend washing the lint screen periodically with water and thoroughly drying it to remove softener residue that can accumulate on the screen. Check the flexible exhaust vent behind the dryer for kinks or clogs. Check the exhaust duct to the outside of the home for restrictions.

If these tips don't help, I recommend calling a service technician to physically check the dryer.
