Question and Answers

Why does my upright kenmore freezer 2539287413 have ice buildup at the top of the inside of the door? Is it the door gasket?

The frost build-up on the top of the inside of the door is likely caused by a bad door gasket as you suspect. Before replacing the door gasket, check to make sure that nothing is blocking the door from closing. Make sure that the freezer is properly leveled side to side and front to back (1/2 bubble back tilt so that the door will swing shut). Check the door gasket for cracks or loose spots. If the door gasket does not appear to be damaged, you can try lubricating it with a light coat of Vaseline petroleum jelly all of the way around. This may help. If not, you will likely need to replace the door gasket (part 216522309 -- $69.07). You can order this part from the Sears PartsDirect website. To replace the freezer door gasket, follow these steps:

  • Soak the new gasket in warm water so that the creases and wrinkles are removed.
  • Remove the old door gasket by loosening (but not removing ) the screws that secure the inner door panel to the outer door panel. You will need to lift the inside edge of the door gasket to reveal these screws.
  • Work the new door gasket lip into the gap between the inner and outer door panels.
  • Tighten the screws to secure the new door gasket in place. Make sure that the door is properly racked and square to that the new door gasket will seal. You can check the door seal by closing the door on a dollar bill in various locations around the door. You should feel some resistance when you pull the dollar bill out with the door still closed.
  • Lubricate the new door seal with a light coat of Vaseline petroleum jelly.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
