Question and Answers

Why won't my Kenmore refrigerator cool properly?

Several different problems could be preventing your refrigerator from cooling properly. To view a parts list diagram of your unit, go to the Sears PartsDirect website [].

Here are some troubleshooting checks that may help you resolve this problem:

  • Make sure that the vent from the freezer to the refrigerator is not blocked or restricted.
  • Check the door gasket in the refrigerator for proper sealing.
  • Make sure that the refrigerator light is turning off properly by pushing in on the refrigerator door switch with the door open.
  • Unplug the refrigerator and remove the evaporator fan cover in the freezer. Check for the wiring and movement of the evaporator fan. A bad evaporator fan could cause this problem. Check the position of the evaporator fan blades. The front edge of each fan blade should extend 1/8" beyond the face of the coil cover as shown in the image below. A bad or improperly positioned evaporator fan could cause refrigerator cooling problems.
  • With the refrigerator unplugged, remove the icemaker and the back wall of the freezer and check for excessive frost on the evaporator coils. This could be caused by a failed defrost system. Manually defrosting the evaporator would initially improve refrigerator cooling. If the defrost system is not working properly, the frost will return. You can check the defrost system by advancing the defrost timer. Observe the defrost heater to see if it heats up. A bad defrost heater or defrost thermostat could prevent the evaporator from being defrosted properly. The wiring diagram is illustrated below.
You may be able to diagnose and repair the cooling problem in your refrigerator using the above information and tips. If not, resubmit your question with additional details for more help with this problem.
