Q:

How often should the compressor be running in my Kenmore freezer model 253?

A:

Without a full model number, it is difficult to see the exact type of Kenmore 253 model of freezer that you have. Depending on the temperature setting inside the freezer and the ambient temperature outside the freezer, it may not be unusual for the freezer to run 90% of the time. In normal situations where the freezer is set at 0 degrees and it is in a climate controlled environment with an ambient temperature of 75 degrees, the compressor on most models will run as much as 80% of the time depending on the amount of food that is loaded in it and whether that food is already frozen. If you have recently loaded the freezer with new food that is not frozen, compressor run time will be longer than normal. An air leak through the door gasket will also increase compressor run time.

A thermostat normally controls the compressor in the 253 type Kenmore freezers. If the food inside is frozen and temperature is around 0 degrees, then the thermostat is likely working properly.

Most modern freezers are designed with smaller compressors than older ones. The compressor is designed for longer run times. Even though it runs for longer, the smaller compressor is more energy efficient than the older ones that were larger and ran for shorter periods of time.

If you are having cooling problems, you could have a weak compressor or an air leak through the door seal. A snowy frost would appear inside the freezer if you have an air leak. If you see that type of situation, I recommend checking the door seal for cracks or loose spots. It may need to be replaced.

If you suspect that you have a compressor or sealed system problem, I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair the freezer.

If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your Kenmore 253 freezer.
