Question and Answers

What would cause my refrigerator to not cool?

You did not indicate if the freezer fan or compressor is running or not.

If the compressor and the freezer fan is running that would most likely indicate a sealed system failure or a defrost failure. It could have developed a leak and the refrigerant has all leaked out or a compressor failure. This type of failure will require a service technician. It also could have a severe air flow blockage due to a failed defrost system. If you see any ice or frost built up on the rear panel in the freezer that would indicate a defrost failure or short on refrigerant.

If you do not hear the compressor and freezer fan running, the defrost timer may have stalled out in the defrost cycle which means it would need a new defrost timer. When the unit goes into the automatic defrost cycle it shuts the compressor and the freezer fan off and turns on the defrost heater. After about 20-30 minutes of defrosting the defrost timer advances, the compressor and freezer fan starts running and begins the cooling mode again. The defrost timer (key#23) is located inside the control panel compartment.
