Question and Answers

What is the difference and part numbers between a "defrost timer" and "cold control" for this Kenmore refrigerator #253.66170501?

The defrost timer # 215846602 controls the defrost cycle. It advances the unit into and out of a defrost cycle. Without a defrost cycle, the back wall in the freezer would have a very heavy frost build-up. If there is no frosting on the back wall, the timer is ok.

The cold control # 5304445058 controls the cycling of the unit, the compressor and fans. It's the control that maintains the temperature. If this unit is cycling off at the temperatures listed, it indicates the cold control has failed and will need to be replaced. If it's not cycling off and just continuously running, it will be a different problem. Check the door seals for gaps and make sure the doors are closing good. Make sure the lights are turning off, when the doors are closed. If these checks are ok, it could be a seal system problem. A technician will be required to make this type of check. If you need more assistance, please resubmit your question with more details.
