Question and Answers

Q:

Why does our freezer stop working after power glitches?

A:

Low voltage and power glitches will sometimes adversely affect the operation of electronic control boards in appliances. A number of Kenmore freezers matching your model number that were produced in 2002 were especially vulnerable to this problem. I recommend checking the serial number plate on your freezer. If your serial number is between WB215 . . . and WB234 . . . and does not have a black dot, it may need an upgraded control board. The 1st numerical digit indicates the year of production (2002) and the next two digits indicate the weeks during that year that the freezer was manufactured (weeks 15 to 34). The black dot was placed on serial number plates when an upgrade was completed. If your freezer was affected, you should have been contacted by Sears regarding this upgrade. If you suspect that your freezer needs this upgraded control board, I recommend resubmitting your question with the full serial number and we will research this issue further.

If your freezer is not in this serial number range, then you will likely need to replace the control board to fix this problem. Repeated power glitches and low voltage conditions can eventually damage any control board. The part number for the control board is 216886000. You can order it from the Sears PartsDirect website.

This control board is accessed from the back of the unit. If you order it and need help replacing it yourself, resubmit your question with additional details. NOTE: Be sure to disconnect electrical power before accessing any internal component.
