Question and Answers

Q:

Craftsman snow thrower model 247886911 won't start

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the snow blower. First, make sure the fuel you are using is less than five weeks old. If it is full of old fuel, you can use a turkey baster to remove the old fuel. Next, be sure red key is pushed in all the way. Then move the choke lever to on and push the primer 3 to 5 times. Then try to start the engine. If the engine does not start, I suspect the problem is a dirty carburetor. To confirm this pour a few teaspoons of fresh fuel into the throat of the carburetor (the first image below will show how to get access to the carburetor.) then pull the starter rope. If the engine tries to start or starts, I recommend cleaning the carburetor. I have posted a few images below to aid in cleaning the carburetor. Once the carburetor is apart, clean all the passages with carb cleaner and a bread tie wire. Please work in a well ventilated area and use caution when working with fuel.

Q:

Engine running erratically.

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the snow blower. By the symptoms you are having I suspect the problem is dirty passages in the carburetor. When the passages start to plug up the engine does not get the needed fuel to run smoothly. Then when you choke the engine, it delivers more fuel and the engine will smooth out. To cure the problem I recommend cleaning the main jet in the carburetor. You will need to purchase a can for carb cleaner from the local auto parts store. Then click on the following link to watch a video on how to clean the carburetor. How to clean snow blower carburetor

The engine is not the same but it will give you an idea on how to do this. I have provided you with an image showing the break down of the carburetor.

The easiest way I have found to drain the tank is with a cheap turkey baster.

Please use extreme caution when dealing with fuel.

Then after you have cleaned the carburetor, start the engine and slowly turn the choke off.

Please let me know if you have any other question on this problem.
