Why does our Kenmore Ultrasoft 200 water softener scream when a faucet is opened and water flows through it?

Try bypassing the water softener and see if the noise continues. If it does, then the noise is not caused by the softener. If the noise stops when the unit is bypassed, then it is likely you have a restriction in the water flow through the top of the softener as water is routed through the resin bed. I provided an illustration below that shows the normal water flow through the softener. If you are able to find and correct a restriction in the incoming or outgoing water path, you should be able to fix this problem.

Be sure to bypass the water softener and disconnect electrical power before accessing internal components.

There are animations available on the Kenmore website that show how to disassemble the components.

If you are not completely confident in your technical ability to safely access the internal components of the water softener, I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair the unit.
