Oil Gasket Leak on Craftsman Eager-1 Lawnmower Model 917 388610

Thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having a problem with the Craftsman mower. I looked at the pictures and I agree it looks like the sump gasket is leaking. This could be cause by a defective gasket or the bolts are coming loose. I recommend removing the engine from the mower housing and check the bolts first. To remove the engine, first remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Then tip the mower so the air filter is up. Next remove the blade and adapter from the crankshaft. If your model has a debris shield you need to remove it next. Then have a helper hold the engine while you remove the engine mounting bolts. Once the engine is removed turn the engine upside down and check the bolt torque. They should be torqued to 100-130 inch pounds. If they are loose tighten them up and reassemble the mower. Then run the mower and check for leaks. If it continues to leak you will need to replace the gasket. To replace the gasket you need to drain the oil and remove the engine as you did before. Then remove the pulley on the bottom of the engine. If the shaft is rusted you should clean the shaft with sand paper. Once the shaft is clean remove all the sump bolts and slide the sump off the shaft. You will need to carfully scrape the old gasket off. Then clean the surfaces with brake cleaner. Next use a flat blade screwdriver to pry out the old crankshaft seal. To install the new seal place it against the sump and drive it in with a block of wood and a hammer. To ensure the new gasket seals you can apply a very thin coat of rtv sealer to the gasket.  Once you have the sealer on the gasket reassemble the engine in the reverse order. Then mount the engine and fill with oil. You are now ready to start the engine and check for leaks.  The two parts you will need are the sumo gasket and the crankshaft seal. The part numbers for then are 470-419 and 495-242.
