Question and Answers

Q:

Hi I am having trouble with the power switch to my Craftsman portable table saw model 137218240.

A:

You need to replace the power switch for the saw. The old switch should snap out of the cabinet of the saw.

Disconnect the power to the table saw. Use a putty knife or a thin blade screwdriver to pry the outer edge of the switch away from the cabinet. Pry a little at a time until the switch will pop out of the cabinet.

Make notes of how the wires attach to the switch so you can install them on the new switch the same way.

The part number of the replacement switch is 27A1, and the cost is around $3.00.

Q:

my craftsman table saw will not start

A:

Thank you for your question.

First disconnect the power plug from the power source.

• If you have a VOLT/OHM meter you will need to check the wiring, starting at the power plug into the harness.

• I’m going to assume we have power at the outlet.

• Check for continuity in the switch. By putting your meter probes across the switch terminals. You will have to disconnect at least one wire from the switch to Check switch in the on and off position.

• Before we get too involved in the wiring harness. Please check the motor brushes and wire connections to them. I would suggest you remove the brush caps and pull the brushes out and look for any burnt or discolored connections. If this checks ok then we can proceed with the wire harness check.

• With your ohm meter set to the resistance RX1 setting check for continuity between the plug prong into the switch with the switch on and through to the overload protector, into one of the brush connections on the motor. Check both wires from the plug in. Check these connections in steps until you get to the motor wire connections. We are looking for an open connection through any of this connection point.

• If all this checks ok there could possible be an open circuit in the motor windings, which would require a motor component replacement.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
