Question and Answers

Q:

kenmor dryer 11066932690 replaced thermo cutoff other day which was bad. it worked but the next day it went bad, what gives?

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The thermal cutoff can fail for various reasons. Since the thermal is mounted on the heating element housing it is very important to have good air flow through the heating element or the thermal cutoff will fail. Check for any restrictions or blockages in the vent system. Remove the lint screen and wash it under warm running water and soft bristle brush. If the motor centrifugal switch contacts 1M and 2M or welded shut, the heating element will come on whenever the timer is set without the dryer running which will also cause the thermal cutoff to open/fail. If the heating element is shorted to ground, the heating element will not cycle completely off whenever the operating thermostat opens.

The heating element should only come on when the dryer is running. If it comes on with the dryer timer is set without it running, check the heating element, and the contacts 1M to 2M to see if it closed or open when the dryer is unplugged. You will need to disconnect the wires from 1M and 2M and check to see if measure continuity with an Ohm meter.
