Q:

Does the thermostat or timer affect the ability of your dryer to get hot?

A:

The operating thermostat can affect the ability of your dryer to heat properly. This component is designed to cycle the heater element off at around 150 degrees. It should close to cycle the heater back on about 10 degrees below that temperature. If it is not cycling properly, it would cause heating problems.

The timer could also cause heating problems. A contact in the timer must close properly to apply the L1 leg of voltage to the heating element for it to heat properly. If this contact is bad, then the dryer will not heat.

Other factors can also prevent your dryer from heating properly. A bad heating element or loose/broken wiring could cause problems.

A failure of the dryer to heat properly can cause the timer to stall. The timer will not advance in the automatic cycle if the operating thermostat is not closing properly. A bad resistor in the timer motor circuit can also cause this problem. The wiring diagram for your dryer is illustrated below.

I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair this dryer problem.
