Q:

Kenmore Elite He3t Front Load Washer Loud Noise In Spin Cycle

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with your washer. Usually when a front load washer makes noise in a spin cycle, it is because of a failed rear tub bearing. The noise is usually a grinding or knocking noise from the back area. If this is the cause of the noise the rear tub, half has to be replaced. This type of repair is a major repair that most customers do not tackle. I checked the warranty on your washer and the good news is the rear tub and the spin basket have a ten year warranty. You would be required to pay the labor cost. In most areas, we offer a flat rate labor rate of $129.00 for any repair on a washer. If you would like to schedule service, you can call 1-800- 469-4663. They will be able to set you up.

Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for using Manage my life.

Corey, First, open the door and grab the front of the spin basket. Then try to wiggle the basket up and down and side to side. If the basket has any play, the rear bearing is defective. I tried to look up the warranty on your washer but the model number did not pull up. If you could double check, the number and reply below I will be happy to look it up. Thanks Mark

Corey, The product engineer sent me the warranty information. I posted a copy of it below. Just click on the image to enlarge it. By the description of the problem, I suspect the bearing in the rear of the tub is bad. If this is the case the parts would covered by warranty but you would be responsible for the cost to have them installed. Please call 1-800-469-4663 to schedule service. NOTE: I recommend checking the large pulley on the back of the spin basket before calling for service. I have seen them come loose and mimic a defective bearing. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark.

Ken,
Usually the washer will make a grinding noise if the bearings are going out. If this seems like the noise, you are hearing I recommend checking the spin basket for play. If you do not feel any play, I do not suspect the bearings. If you do not feel it is the bearings, I recommend unplugging the washer and removing the top. Then plug the washer in and run a load. Once the washer starts to make the noise, you should be able to pin point where it is coming from. Do not put you hands in to the top of the washer when it is plugged in. If you do feel, play the problem is likely in the bearings. Your model has the same warranty listed above. Please reply below with more details, if you need further assistance. Hello Tracey. Your details indicate that you probably have a failure in that rear tub spin bearing and the stainless steel basket. That model of HE3 front load washer has a 10 year limited parts warranty on the outer plastic tub that houses that spin bearing. The stainless steel spin basket has a limited lifetime parts warranty. Based on your serial number, that outer plastic tub that has the bearing should still be under warranty. You would need to pay for labor to have a Sears service technician diagnose and repair that failure but the parts would likely be covered. You can call Sears at 1-800-469-4663 (1-800-4MY-HOME) to schedule service. I recommend that you have the washer serviced if you intend to fix this problem. If you need more help, let us know.

Hello Greg. That serial number has a date code. That washer was manufactured on the 17 week of 2002 according to that serial number. That indicates that the 10 year limited parts warranty on the plastic tub with bearing has expired. The stainless steel spin basket part has a limited lifetime parts warranty. If you need more help, let us know.

Although the spin basket would be covered, the likely cost of parts and labor would likely be too high to justify that repair even if you replaced that plastic tub yourself. I recommend that you replace that washer. I recommend that you consider a direct drive model of front load washer. Here is the one that I would pick if I had to replace mine: Kenmore Front Load Washer Model 41172 . That washer has a direct drive motor and is a good value. I have a model that is very similar and it is dependable. If you need more help, let us know. Thanks.

csblonde,

I looked up the serial number you submitted. The washer is a 2007 model. The rear tub and the spin basket are still under warranty. You would be responsible for the labor cost. I recommend calling 1-800-469-4663.
