Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore Washer Not Filling With Cold water.

A:

Hi David,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

From the description you give I suspect the cold water inlet valve is bad. If you have a volt meter the diagnosis can be confirmed by checking voltage across the valve during a cold water fill. Here is a video that demonstrates gaining access to the inlet valves; Video . Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts. The washer in this video may not look exactly like yours, but the procedure is basically the same. If there is no voltage then most likely the problem will be with the electronic temperature control board (part number W10184148) and not with the valve. If you don't have a meter or don't fill comfortable checking voltage there is another way. You can try swapping the two wires from the hot water valve to the cold water valve. You know the hot valve works and you know there is voltage on the two wires going to the hot inlet valve. If you swap the wires and the cold valve works then the problem will most likely be with the temperature control board. If there is still no cold water then you know the inlet valve (part number 3979346) is bad.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
