A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Based on your symptom and details the door lock assembly is likely faulty and needs to be replaced. I added the instructions in the image below on how to remove the lid lock switch assembly if you feel confident in doing so. There is no emergency release but you can remove your clothes after raising the top. I also see Pvalde2 provided a useful link in the first response too. NOTE:Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing your washer.

The lid lock assembly is part #W10059230 which can be ordered at Sears PartsDirect

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Based on your symptoms and details, the "User Interface" is faulty. The user interface is located directly behind the face of the control panel. The part number of the user interface is #8564392 . The user interface for Kenmore washer model 110.27087602 can be ordered from Searspartsdirect.com

I added an image below with the procedure of removing the user interface. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing.

Steve: Accessing and replacing the user interface is relatively easy and you should have no problems in doing so. Just remember to disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet before servicing.

I added an image below with the instructions for removing the basket. The grinding is likely caused by the basket not seating all the way down and meshing with the drive shaft hub.
