Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore 110-20912990 Washer Tub Clicking Noise

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Based on your symptom and details it sounds like the basket is slipping on the drive block. The basket is secured to a spin tube. There is drive block that slides over the end of the spin tub up under the agitator. There is large spanner nut that is tightend down over the threads of the drive block and I suspect the spanner nut loosened up causing the basket to spin on the drive block causing the clicking noise. There are a couple of ears/tabs on the tip of the drive tube which engages in a couple of notches on the drive block which is likely worn down now. The drive block will likely need to be replaced if just tightening the spanner nut does not resolve the issue.

In order to access and replace the drive block, the washer cabinet must be taken off the base. The tub cover will need to be taken off and the agitator. Once the agitator has been taken out,  the spanner nut can be tightened or removed in order to remove the spin basket and drive block. I added an image below and circled the drive block, spanner nut and the ears on the end of the spin tube.

In order to remove the washer cabinet, you will need to first, disconnect the power cord from the power source

The console will need to be placed in the service position by removing two hidden (2) screws, one (1) screw located at the bottom of the left hand end cap and one (1) screw located at the bottom of the right hand end cap.

In order to access the two (2) hidden screws, the left hand end cap trim  and the right hand end cap trim will need to be removed.

To remove the end cap covers,  place you finger behind the trim at the very top and bend it up enough to clear the console and then hinge it towards the front and off.

Remove the screw at the bottom of the end caps. Slide the console forwards about 1/4 inch and the raise it upwards and hinge it over the rear panel.

Disconnect the 3 wire lid switch harness plug located on the top. Pop the two (2) gold colored cabinet clips off as shown in the image below.

Place the tip of a flat tipped screw driver down into the first valley and then push the handle end to the rear of the washer to pop off the cabinet clips.

Open the lid and grab the opening and tilt the top of the washer cabinet forwards just a few degrees and then walk it backwards and off.

You can now remove the tub cover, agitator and the spin basket in order to remove and replace the drive block if needed. To remove the agitator after removing the fabric dispenser and cap, you will need a 1/2 inch drive ratchet extension to place in the spring retainer in order to unscrew and remove it. There is special spanner wrench used to remove or tighten the spanner nut. The part number of the spanner wrench is 14218862. The wrench can be ordered at SearsPartsDirect.

Q:

I need instructions on how to remove the motor, and transmission to replace some striped gears.

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

You may not have stripped gears inside the gear case. If the washer will not agitate or spin and only drains, the motor coupler is most likely broken.

I added a YouTube video showing the procedure of removing the motor and motor coupler . I also added a video showing the procedure of removing the gear case .

The motor coupler #285753A for Kenmore washer model 110.20912990 can be ordered from Sears Parts Direct. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord and turn off the water supply and remove the fill hoses before servicing.

To access the gears inside the gear case; remove all the screws from the gear case cover.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
