Where are the auto shut-off sensors for the ice maker on my Kenmore Elite refrigerator model 10652694100?

A:

There is an infrared level sensing beam sending board on the left side of the freezer wall just inside the door. The receiver board is on the opposite wall. Turning the blue cover switch to the ON position uncovers the receiver sensing eye. Make sure that the ice bucket in the door is proper inserted so that it does not block the beam between the sending and receiving board. This is the level sensing shut-off device for the ice maker.

Check the ice maker module. The ejector arm should be in the 2 o'clock home position. If not, the ice maker module will not get voltage from the receiver board to cycle. A technician would be needed to repair the ice maker if you find this problem.

There is a diagnostic test for the sending and receiving boards in this refrigerator. Here is the diagnostic procedure:

  1. Open the freezer door.
  2. Remove enough ice from the ice bin so that the ice level is at least one inch below the U-shaped cutouts in the bin. (Since your ice maker has not been working, you should be able to skip this step.)
  3. Make sure the ice maker manual shutoff slide is in the “ON� (open) position on the infrared receiver module.
  4. Close the freezer door for a minimum of 10 seconds.
  5. Open the freezer door and activate the freezer door switch 3 times. NOTE: This step must be completed within 10 seconds of opening the freezer door.
  6. Close the freezer door within 20 seconds of completing step 5.
  7. Wait for a minimum of 5 seconds, and a maximum of 50 seconds, then open the freezer door and view the status LED on the infrared receiver module for the error code. NOTE: You will have 60 seconds to open the freezer door, and 2 seconds from then to view the LED output code.
If the optics boards are both good, the status LED on the receiver board will stay on steady for 5 seconds.

If the LED light stays off, then repeat the above test. If you still get no response from the LED light on the second attempt, then the sending and receiving optics boards will need to be replaced. The part number for this kit is 4389102. You can order this part from the Sears PartsDirect website www.searspartsdirect.com .

If you observe two LED pulses (flashes), this would indicate that the level sensing beam is blocked or one of the boards may be defective. Perform the following steps:

  1. Open the freezer door and remove the ice bin from the door.
  2. Make sure the ice maker manual shutoff slide is in the “on� (open) position.
  3. Tape the spring-loaded emitter door to the emitter cover in the “down� position.
  4. Close the freezer door for at least 10 seconds.
  5. Open the freezer door and actuate the freezer door switch 3 times. NOTE: This step must be completed within 10 seconds of opening the freezer door.
  6. Close the freezer door within 20 seconds of completing step 5.
  7. Wait for a minimum of 5 seconds, and a maximum of 50 seconds, then open the freezer door, and view the status LED on the infrared receiver module for the error code. NOTE: You will have 60 seconds to open the freezer door, and 2 seconds from then to view the LED output code.
If the LED still flashes twice, there could be dirt or frost on the optics, something could be blocking the infrared beam path, or the optics may be defective. Clean the optic elements and repeat the previous test. If the LED does not flash, the ice maker may have been in a harvest, preventing the diagnostics from being performed. Look at the ice maker to make sure the ejector is at the home position. If it is, wait 3 minutes, and try running test again. If the LED still does not flash, the optics boards are likely defective and will need to be replaced.

This diagnostic test should help you determine whether the optics boards are okay in the freezer.
