Question and Answers

Q:

Why do I still have fibers in the water of my Kenmore Elite refrigerator dispenser even after I changed the filter?

A:

The fibers that you are describing are likely cysts or harmless bacteria. I recommend removing the filter and purging about 3 gallons of tap water through the dispenser. Assuming that your tap water is chlorinated, the chlorine will kill this growth. The water filter dispenser has an automatic bypass so the water system will work normally with the filter removed and will not leak. Leave the water filter out for 1 week to cycle the chlorinated water through the ice maker system. After a week, you should see that the fibers have disappeared. Replace the filter and you should be okay. If you use your water dispenser infrequently, try to remember to purge at least a glass or two of water through the dispenser daily to prevent the cysts from returning. If the growth reappears periodically in the future, repeat the process of running chlorinated tap water through the system for a week.
