Your symptoms point to a problem with the carburetor. You could have a partial blockage in that main jet. I recommend that you clean the carburetor.

I have a model 917293310 tiller about 9 years old. The carb. will not come clean and will only run on choke.

If your engine is a Briggs and Stratton model 121432-0124-E1, you need carburetor number 698479. If your engine is a different model number and you looked up the part number for the carburetor, order the 498479.

The carburetor prices go up as they get older and there are fewer in stock.

Replacing the kit won't do any good unless you clean all the fuel and air passages inside the carburetor with a soft wire, carburetor cleaner, and compressed air to blow them out.

The best bet is to bite the bullet and order the complete carburetor.
