Too much heat or cold in a room makes it uninhabitable. With the help of products such as Empire furnaces, air blowers and heaters, you can live in comfort. These machines function properly and efficiently with a little maintenance. If a product malfunctions, you can often fix it with some knowledge about common parts and problems.

An air handler has a few common problems

  • Airflow problems—Air must flow into the heater before it is pumped to your room. If dirt, leaves, or any other debris obstruct airflow, the machine will strain to pull air into the system, resulting in uneven heating and excessive energy consumption.
  • Blower motor failure—The blower motor could fail because of a bad control board, failed motor or a burnt capacitor. Repairing or replacing the failed parts can bring the motor back to life.
  • Dirty evaporator coils—These cause the air handler to become dirty and eventually cause serious damage to the compressor.
  • Missing refrigerant liquids—The liquid cools the air that comes into your room. If it’s missing, the temperature regulation process will be incomplete. Check for refrigerant leaks.

These are critical parts of an Empire air handler

  • Electric control board—This powers the appliance and allows you to control it through a display panel. It contains numerous transistors and capacitors that power the various components of your Empire appliance. Refer to the owner’s manual to find the location of the board. As you replace the control board, disconnect power to the unit and handle the control board with care to prevent damage.
  • Power cord—This connects your appliance to the power supply. Wear and tear might cut the cord or expose the inner wires. If you notice cuts or exposed wires, replace the cord with a new one. When installing the cord, disconnect power from the unit and wear work gloves to protect your hands.
  • Furnace blower wheel—A furnace blower wheel rotates to circulate air through the system. Replace the blower wheel if it’s damaged. When replacing this component, ensure the appliance is disconnected from the electrical supply.
  • Furnace transformer—This changes the supply voltage to a lower voltage sufficient for your control devices. To replace it, disconnect the unit from the power supply and remove the old transformer. Connect the wires to the new transformer correctly to avoid damaging the unit.
  • Furnace valve—This opens and closes to allow the flow of gas into the heating component of your appliance. When replacing this part, remember to shut off the gas supply and disconnect the electrical supply to the unit. Wear protective gloves when completing this repair. Properly seal and leak-check gas line connections.
