How to Fix Rusted Dishwasher Tines

file

If the vinyl coating on dishwasher tines and racks become cracked, moisture that seeps under the coating can rust the metal wires inside.

You don't have to replace the whole dishwasher rack if the tines have rusted. It costs less to use a tine repair kit to fix it yourself. Dishwasher tine repair kits come in a few colors and inlcude caps that slip over the end of the tine and a small bottle of vinyl paint for repairing nicks in the vinyl.

Repairing the tines is easy:

  1. Clean and dry the damaged tip.

  2. Apply a small amount of the vinyl paint to the tip of the tine to act as a sealant.

  3. Slip a replacement cap over the end of the tine and push down firmly.

  4. Wipe excess paint from the bottom of the cap.

  5. Let paint and tip dry for several hours.

You can also use the paint to touch up chipped or rusted areas on the rack. Clean and dry the chipped or rusted spot, paint the damaged area and let the paint dry.

You can buy a new rack for your dishwasher if the rack frame is broken or rusting.
