Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tiller. In the details of you question you did not say which shaft is sheared. Replacing any of the shafts requires the unit to be fully disassembled. Most customers find it easier to replace the complete the transmission. If you decide to replace just the shaft, the parts can be ordered from the following link. Parts for Craftsman tiller model 917296040. Before ordering the shaft, check the bearings and seals. This would be a good time to replace them as well.

I hope this is helpful. If you need further assistance, please reply below with more details.  Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark

there is only one shaft attached to transmission sheaf. It broke off flush, a piece of shaft in the pulley. Is it the imput shaft?

Mark T , March 15, 2013

michael, Thank you for the clarification of which shaft broke. The unit has an input shaft and a tine shaft. I looked up the part number for the input shaft. It is part number 161518. Before ordering the shaft, I recommend checking the input shaft bearings. If they have any play, they should be replaced also. I would also make sure you could remove the broken part of the shaft from the pulley. I have seen the shaft rust and cause the pulley to lock on the shaft. When you take the transmission apart, I recommend taking pictures as you go. They may come in handy if you forget how it goes back together. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark.

Thanks Mark, you are correct about pictures. Having worked in shipyards 30 yrs. I've taken many pics of complicated repairs. I have 2 transmissions (old) to go by. I may just buy the whole unit as you suggested. Thank you for the expert advice, it really helps to get the complete repair needed in my head. Michael
