Whirlpool gold freezer. Model GB9FHDXWS04 is leaking water. Drain continues to freeze over

Whirlpool gold freezer (GB9FHDXWS04) is leaking onto my floor. I thawed the drain from the inside using a steamer, and for two days it seemed to work. Now I'm back the chipping ice again. Do I need to access the freezer from the back? How can I fix this permanently? I will be gone for a month and I'm worried about my hardwood floor which already took on some damage.

I know that it can be very inconvenient for you not to have your freezer working properly.  While you are waiting for an expert to respond, I have added a helpful link that may provide information to assist you with your question.

Thank you for submitting your question. I understand your concern and I will be happy to assist you. If the freezer section gets too cold (below zero degrees) the defrost drain will keep freezing up. Sometimes air can migrate up the drain tube and cause it to freeze up or the drain hole may have a restriction that eventually forces it to freeze up. There are a couple of things that will help reduce the possibility of this happening:

  1. Install a heat probe (819043) in the drain hole
  2. Attach a duckbill grommet (849307) on the end of the drain tube

The heat probe attaches to the defrost element on one end and the other end fits in the drain. Instructions will be included with it. The duckbill fits on the end of the drain tube at the bottom, in the compressor section. You can order parts from our Sears Parts Direct web site. I hope this helps. Please reply back to this thread if you require further assistance. Thank you for using Manage My Life.
