washing machine making a loud, grinding noise
Sears recommended that I email you. Maytag Washer MAVT236AWW- this machine makes a loud, grinding noise when it spins. I was told that it needs a "clutch". Can you tell me where this clutch is and how much it is. This machine is 5 years old and gets used every two weeks, medium loads. I'm trying to determine whether it is worth it to fix it.

thank you for submitting a question to manage my life.
this washer does not have a clutch. the noise you are hearing is most likely coming from the brake. the repair is difficult and requires a special tool that is about $80. the brake assembly has a compressive spring force of approximately 200 pounds. this can cause bodily injury. i highly recommend having a trained service technician evaluate this problem. you can have it repaired at your home by a sears technician. here is a link for the website: sears home services .
if you would like to perform this repair yourself, i will send the documents you need in a pdf file.
