Kenmore Refrigerator & Freezer not cooling.

I have a side-by-side Kenmore model 10659782990. The freezer and frig stopped working two days ago. I turned the unit off at the panel and cleaned underneath the frig. The condensors, compressor, fan and bottom are very clean and free of dust. I then turned the frig back on. The freezer froze and made ice and the frig was cool. However, sometime throughout the night it stopped again. I again turned the unit off (setting it to 0) while leaving it plugged-in and turned it back on (setting it at 4). It started to run. I left for work... It seems like there might be a termostat issue or maybe the fan isn't cooling off the compressor. Truely, I would be guessing. Please help.. Thank you

when the refrigerator and freezer are not working, most of us are guessing. it sounds like you took the important first steps. the expert will review your model and respond. in the meantime if you would like to check some common possible causes i attached a link below from another expert. i also added the link to sears home services as an option if you decide you would like an experienced technician to visit.

from the description you give it is not a defrost problem.

make sure the condenser fan is working and that the evaporator fan is working.

the condenser coils should be hot to the touch. if the coils are not hot then there is a sealed system problem.

make sure the compressor is still running. do you hear a click every few minutes?

freezing ice is a good thing but that would prove only 32 degrees was reached.

it may be a control thermostat problem. the unit might cycle off but not come back on. if the unit shuts off try turning the thermostat to a colder setting and then tap it with your finger and see if it comes on.

i hope this helps. you can reply with any additional details or questions for further assistance.
