Craftsman 917.374544 lawn mower

I have been reading this conversation (http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/301656-installation-part-434993-cable-craftsman-917374544-mower) with great interest. I also have the Craftsman 917.374544 Mower. The red drive control handle snapped off while I was cutting grass. The mower is still under warranty and I was sent the entire drive control unit long with the attached drive control wire with the fittings that attach to the drive motor/belt. Based on the above existing conversation and especially the photos, it looks like I could just replace the red plastic handle within the drive control unit instead of installing the entire unit. I have no problem replacing the drive unit itself, but what concerns me is the wire that is attached to the actual drive motor and/or belt. Could I just replace the red lever itself if I open up both drive units? I am quite familiar with installing garbage disposals and doing plumbing, but messing with the drive motor of a lawn mower concerns me!

it would be great if the handle can be installed by itself. i did some research but was not able to find an answer. i am adding a link below to the parts list for your mower. i do hope that this will help you until your expert answers your question. it may take 24-48 hours. i do hope that all goes well.

thank you for your question.

i am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. i will be happy to assist you. i believe you can take the control assembly apart and replace just the lever. i posted an image below that shows the parts of the control. just click on the image to enlarge it. before taking the new control apart, i recommend taking the old control apart first. if you find it is too big of a pain, you can install the new cable and control.

i hope this is helpful. please let me know if you need further assistance.

thank you for using manage my life.
