Riding mower Brake Pad replacement
Sears riding mower, model # 917272420. Hydro gear transaxle drawing and parts description are unclear as to what the brake pad is. On the drawing and parts list, the following are listed: #59 - brake rotor. #60 - brake. #61 - puck. #60 - brake. Listed in that order. It looks like part # 60 - there are 2 listed on the drawing and they lie on each side of the rotor, could be the brake pads. Then again they could be the brake assembly. Sears spares person on the phone was unable to give me any further information. Any answers?

On your transmission assembly, key number 60 is the brake pad. There will be one on each side of the disc (key 59). On the outside there is a plate (they call it a “puck plate”) on the outside of the pad. That little plate will rarely, if ever, need to be replaced. I have cut up all sorts of steel to use in its place when in a bind and needing a part. The plate’s whole purpose in life is to assist in making distributing the pressure to both ends of the pad.
