Both homeowners and professional landscapers rely on Honda walk-behind mower model parts to keep their lawnmowers working well. A common issue encountered in these mowers is difficulty getting them to start. If you are experiencing problems starting your lawnmower, apply these simple troubleshooting tips.

Check the Spark Plug

Lawnmower engines have an ignition coil that delivers a spark to the spark plug each time the flywheel rotates, causing the engine to work. If the spark plug is defective, the engine is hard to start. Use a spark plug tester to see whether or not the spark plug is working. If you do not see a clear, strong spark between the electrodes, replace the plug. You can find spark plugs and other Honda walk-behind mower parts at Sears PartsDirect.

Check the Oil

One of the simplest walk-behind mower troubleshooting tips is to check your oil. Oil not only lubricates your lawnmower engine's moving parts but also acts as a coolant that prevents the lawnmower from overheating. When oil levels are low, your engine may be hard to start or may run only a short time before seizing up. If your lawnmower has a low-oil sensor, insufficient oil levels prevent the engine from turning over completely. For this reason, it is a good idea to check your oil levels often and change the oil regularly.

Drain the Carburetor

A clogged carburetor makes your engine difficult to start because no gas can reach the engine. To remedy this, drain old fuel from the carburetor and gas tank. Replace it with fresh fuel and a stabilizer to thwart excessive moisture buildup.
