Question and Answers

Q:

Heat is on very short time. WGD6400SW1 Whirlpool Residential dryer

A:

Thank you for your inquiry on your Whirlpool Dryer, Model: WGD6400SW1. From reviewing the details on your model, the burner is not supposed to stay on continuously, once the dryer reaches the normal operating temperature the burner is supposed to cycle off. The dryer has an operating thermostat that opens and breaks the electrical circuit to the gas valve assembly and the burner shuts off. Once the temperature drops the operating/control thermostat will close and complete the circuit to the gas valve assembly to cause the glow bar igniter to begin glowing until the flame switch opens which causes the solenoid on the gas valve to energize and open the gas valve which will ignite from the glow bar igniter. If you find the glow bar igniter glowing and then fading back off without any burner ignition would indicate weak solenoid coils on the gas valve and they both will need to be replaced. Now, if you have a restriction in the venting system it can cause the flame to shut off prematurely and it will cause the flame to stay off longer than normally. This will cause your clothes to take a lot longer to dry. For testing purposes only, disconnect the vent hose from the back of the dryer and then dry load while watching the burner operation. NOTE: DO NOT open door to while running. If the burner stays on longer and the clothes dry faster, this would confirm a restriction in the venting system.

Safety Warning: Before beginning the repair, disconnect the direct power supply to the dryer to prevent the risk of injury or any electrical shock.
