Question and Answers

Q:

GE front load washer door wont unlock.

A:

I can understand your concern on the Kenmore washer that will not shut off completely. I did some research and found a similar question on managemylife.com. Hope this is useful information while an expert responds to your specific model. If you decide on service, that link is also available below.

You can unplug the washer and manually unlock the door. The first image below shows how to remove the bottom front service panel. Remove that panel and then carefully reach up along the inside of the panel and pull down on the release ring tab that is at the bottom of the door lock assembly. That ring is shown in the photograph on the right side of that first image.

After you empty the washer, you may need to check the drain system if the tub was still filled with water. If the tub was empty, then you may need to replace that door lock assembly. Check the door lock assembly for debris that could have caused the strike to get stuck. There is a chance that you can fix this problem without replacing parts if you find debris in that area and clear it out. If you do not find any apparent problems with the door lock assembly, then it may still need to be replaced if it has an internal component failure. If you want to fix the washer yourself, then you can order parts from this page: GE Washer Model WCVH6400J0WW Parts . Be sure that you unplug the washer before accessing internal components.

You may be able to use the diagnostic test that is shown in the second image to help you diagnose the washer if necessary. The third image shows the error codes. This information may help you determine the cause of your washer failure before ordering parts.

If you need more help with this repair, reply with additional details.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Based on your symptom and details it could have a faulty door lock assembly providing the control is not in a "LOCK" mode.

To lock or unlock the control panel press and hold the Delay Start button for 3 seconds and some models you would press the Signal button for 3 seconds.

If the control panel is not locked; it sounds like the control is not sensing the door being shut meaning a possible faulty door lock assembly. It could also have loose wire between the door lock and control too. It could also have a faulty control board. I added an image below to see if will go into the service mode. Follow the instructions in the image below and it should bring up a list of fault codes up to 10 codes.

I suggest calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your washer if you're not bringing up any fault codes. You could take a chance and replace the door lock assembly but I can't be certain replacing the door lock assembly will resolve the issue.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

This is interesting [and frustrating]... installed new control board. On the INITIAL power-up it worked. Or I should say: the door locked. So I think wiring & lock/latch mechanism is fine. However - after completing the program, selecting model number etc. & resetting... Same problem! Still will not bring up any fault codes either.

Karl: I strongly suggest calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your washer. You gave a try and at this point I would strongly suggest calling a technician so you do not waste money on installing a part that does not resolve the issue.
